Head way down to see Hadestown, Broadway’s smash-hit Tony Award-winning musical. Created by singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell, the music of Hadestown blends different genres, like folk, blues, rock, and pop, for a mesmerizing and catchy score. Mitchell, who also wrote the book, teamed up with Rachel Chavkin, director of Natasha, Pierre, & The Great Comet of 1812, to transform Hadestown from a concept album into a full-scale stage event.
A reimagined take on famous Greek myths, the show follows Orpheus, a poor musician who falls in love with Eurydice, a lonely girl who also lives in poverty. Eurydice is doubtful of the relationship and eventually agrees to work in the title Hadestown factory, where she’s promised protection, not realizing she’s sacrificing her freedom, too. Orpheus must save her — but Hades won’t make it easy. New York Theatre Guide says of Hadestown, “Going to hell has never been as much fun,” while Variety calls the show “perfectly heavenly.”
The first production of Hadestown began in 2006 as a “DIY theatre project” in Mitchell's home state of Vermont. She then created a concept album of Hadestown, which featured Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, before adapting it for the stage again. The musical premiered at New York Theatre Workshop in 2016, next riding the train to Toronto and London. Hadestown transferred to Broadway in 2019 and has raised hell at the Walter Kerr Theatre ever since.
